So, I do really random things, on a whim.
Alone with the kids.
I would normally rather go places with friends because it is just easier. But I don't like dragging my friends and their kids on my 'make your own adventure' trips, because I never know how they will turn out. I rather be the guinea pig because I am laid back about outings. (Even just the hour car ride was relaxing to me.)
But, for months, I have wanted to adventure out to Ham Orchards in Terrell, Tx.
They are closed on Sundays, and for the past 4 months we have had some kind of sporting event on Saturdays. So I decided to just go alone and check it out.
1. It is a drive. It says it is 75 minutes from Frisco, but I made it right at 1 hour.
2. It is hot.
But I think it is somewhere I will go visit every summer.
It is precious.
The 'general store' alone is worth the trip.
Tons of fresh picked produce. Jams, sauces, dry mixes, BBQ sauce, baked breads, pies, fudge, drink mixes, and homemade peach and strawberry ice cream.
You can pick your own strawberries, blueberries, or blackberries, or just buy them already picked. We ended up not picking since we arrived at noon and it was already 100 degrees outside. The prices were still reasonable, I got a gallon of blueberries for $10.00. The largest size at Costco is $7, and I filled up 3 of those containers. We also came home with blackberries, cherries, and peaches. I don't even like peaches, but these were so juicy I needed gloves on or something.
The BBQ, peach tea, and fresh baked rolls were amazing.
This is when I felt bad about going without Brandon.
Kids meals were $4.00.... Hotdog, drink, and chips. But not like a sick hotdog, like a good bbq hot dog.
They have chopped beef, sliced beef, sausage, chicken, and chicken salad sandwiches. You can also just order meat alone too. Or get half or a whole brisket.
And, if you ask the boys about the farm, this is what you will hear:
A train stopped on the tracks right in front of us.
Literally. Right in front of us.
We probably could have touched it.
Every single grandpa in the place lit up when they saw Luke and Hudson stand up and start screaming about how exciting this was.
Ice cream on the way out.
And if you know Luke, you know he doesn't eat ice cream, cake, or cookies. But he would not even share this with me. He just waited for it to melt so he could drink it like a milk shake.
And Hudson, obviously, had no issues finishing his.
Trying to teach Luke how to just eat around the cherry pit.
He rather dig it out.
If you make the trek out there:
1. bring a cooler with ice to bring the stuff back in. (They sell coolers and ice there too if you forget.)
2. They take all forms of credit cards
3. If you go without your husband, don't talk about how great the food was, and not bring him home any meat. :(
So far I have made blueberry smoothies and blueberry muffins. Need more berry ideas!
And I have a bunch frozen already for more smoothies!

Don't you miss me? I was always up for your adventures...
ReplyDeleteI miss you! We never got to go berry picking before you left! :(
